Starboard is unveiling the reimagined Whopper range, a celebrated icon in the world of SUP that has been thrilling paddlers since its debut in 2009. Originally designed as a “Big Boy’s Board” for its exceptional stability and versatility, the Whopper has been updated with modern innovations to enhance its performance in the waves, making it even more beloved by riders of all levels.
A LEGACY OF INNOVATION
The Whopper has been a cornerstone of Starboard’s SUP lineup since its introduction over 15 years ago. Designed to offer both new paddlers and experienced surfers an exceptional experience, the original Whopper was known for its impressive stability and surprisingly agile surf performance. Over the years, its reputation for being the go-to board for both beginners and advanced surfers alike solidified its status as a top seller and fan favorite.
Inspired by the success of our Spice range—an innovative line known for its performance-oriented design and user-friendly feel—we saw an opportunity to infuse the Whopper with new elements to enhance its capabilities. Working with Portuguese surfboard shaper Louis Lacrau, known for his groundbreaking work with beveled rails and high-performance shapes, we integrated these design advancements into the Whopper. The result is a modernized board that retains its iconic stability while offering enhanced performance and maneuverability.
One of the riders told us that he exclusively buys the Whopper and talked to us in detail about all the elements of the board that he is in love with. And the fact of the matter was, this guy was a great surfer but was limited to higher volume boards due to his weight. That’s when we had the idea of spicing up the much-loved Whopper and revamping this icon.

WHAT’S NEW IN 2025?
The updated Whopper range brings a host of new features and refinements:
- NEW SHAPE
A fresh shape that combines our favorite elements from both the Spice and original Whopper, blending stability with advanced performance. - BEVELLED RAILS
Inspired by the Spice range, the soft beveled rails allow for smooth transitions into turns despite the board’s width. This design creates a thinner pinched apex that requires less foot pressure to turn. - WING TAIL
A redesigned wing tail that offers comfort for beginners with a wider outline and increased maneuverability for advanced riders. - THINNER TAIL
The new thinner tail enhances carving and responsiveness, requiring less foot pressure for more control. - NARROWER NOSE OUTLINE
This design allows for faster and straighter paddling while minimizing paddle contact and reducing the chances of catching during turns. - 5 FIN SET UP
Each board in the range features a versatile 5-fin setup, offering the flexibility to customize your ride with both quad and thruster options. - FLAT DECK AND WIDE OUTLINE
Provides exceptional stability, making it easier to catch waves and conserve energy. - CLASSIC LIMITED SERIES CONSTRUCTION
Ensures durability and performance, paying homage to the Whopper’s iconic status.
We took new Whopper boards on multiple occasions to Phuket when the surf was up, adding a few bonus features such as a slightly adjusted rocker line to make it super easy in waves for larger guys and girls.
The new 5-degree fins in combination with the bevelled rails, wing tail and thinner tail gave this board outstanding performance – we could not believe we were on such a large board yet carving like we were on a performance longboard. – Starboard R&D Team
