It was an epic day of action at the Gran Canaria Pro Beach Race, and the 5th stop of 2022 SUP EuroTour. The beach race event featured a new two-heat format of racing, which was a great success and all the competitors loved it. The 2 heats consisted of a 2km technical race through the surf, with a midway portage around the beach flags to keep things interesting. The total times of each race were combined to get the final results, which meant there was no relaxing for any of the competitors in any of the racing — full blast all the way!
Spanish team rider Espe Barreras took both heat wins, leading from start to finish in both races, to claim the women’s overall champion title. Here’s how the Starboard Dream Tem rider sums up the weekend’s racing action:
“The beach starts were quite tight, but from the first buoy turn, I led both races, catching bumps to the shore, with running fast around the flags. Once again I felt super fast and riding my “magic” All Star and Lima Paddle.
In second place Anáis showed her technique in these conditions, followed by Duna Gordillo third. Well done to them and everyone that participated.”

On the men’s side, it was Aussie Ty Hudson who took the victory. Local Spanish talent and Starboard National Team rider Rafa Sirvent finished 2nd with an outstanding performance. The fight for 3rd was intense between Aaron Sanchez and young talent Ethan Bry, however, Sanchez was solid all day and his consistency saw him take 3rd. After a tough first heat Ethan had a phenomenal second heat, moving him to 4th overall. Spanish rider Antonio Morillo closed out the coveted top 5.
