The Starboard Dream Team rider from Gran Canaria adds her ninth consecutive Spanish national title, winning every championship from 2012 to 2020.
A Frouxeira Beach, A Coruña, September 1, 2020 – Iballa Ruano Moreno has revalidated her title of Spanish SUP Surfing National Champion, by beating the Basque rider Alazne Aurrecoechea in a close final, Alexia Kiefer, also from Gran Canaria, finished third in her debut in a Spanish Surfing Federation (FESurfing) competition, and Esperanza Barreras, from Galicia, who was fourth. With this victory, Iballa adds nine consecutive national championships, prolonging a hegemony that began in 2012.
The first day of the Spanish Championship (CESURF), held on the beach of A Frouxeira, in the Coruña town of Valdoviño, started with the SUP wave category and was marked by the strict health and hygiene protocols developed by the FESurfing, which they guaranteed the safety of the riders, judges and the general public.
The event started first thing in the morning, coinciding with the low tide. In the first-round, Iballa Ruano added 16.17 points, thanks to two waves of 8.00 and 8.17 points, which helped her to qualify directly for the final. The decisive round was marked by emotion, as it was necessary to wait for the final moments to certify the triumph of the Pozo Izquierdo rider, with the last two waves of 6.33 and 6.10 points, for a total of 12.43 points.
“It has been a liberation to be able to compete again,” said Iballa Ruano just out of the water. “This triumph is very special since the COVID-19 pandemic has changed all the sporting plans of the season and we still do not know if it will be the only championship of the year,” said the Canarian rider, who was happy to be able to surf in Galicia, with good waves and ideal weather. Iballa thanked the Anfi Group, Volkswagen Comerciales Canarias and Starboard for their support, which has allowed her to maintain “at the highest level and continue winning in this complex time.”
Basque rider Alazne Aurrecoechea battled Iballa all the way to the end of the heat with real chances of victory, as she only needed a wave of 7.43 points to claim victory, but that opportunity did not come in time and finished second with a combined score of 9.80 points.
Third place went to Alexia Kiefer from Gran Canaria, who, like Iballa Ruano, combines the professional windsurfing circuit and SUP Olas. Fellow Starboard teammate Espe Barreras finished in fourth.
