The Aussie Powerhouse Michael Booth wins 2018 Australian National Titles making it 3 for 3, shows he is in great mental & physical form heading into the 2018 ISA SUP World Championships taking place later this month. Boothy recaps the weekend’s racing from Down Under;
“It had been a nice 4 weeks off SUP racing heading into the National Titles on the Gold Coast. With heavy water being cancelled it gave me some time to refresh the mind and body and do some fun downwind training.
The Tech Race was run on the Monday afternoon and we were treated with some pretty epic conditions. It was about 20knots crosswind, with 2-3ft of surf and a very challenging course and competitive field. I spent a fair portion of the race in the top 3 swapping leads with Lincoln Dews and James Casey but after paddling into no man’s land and missing waves on the third lap I went from first to fourth and that’s how it stayed. It was one of those days were your race can change very quickly if you don’t pick the right line coming in and out of the break. But in saying that I was very happy with the way I raced!
Tuesday we competed in the Distance Race and were once again greeted with 18-20 knot Southerlies. I paddled the Starboard Ace 14 x 23.5 to have some control out there on the course that had a bit of everything. We started at Rainbow Bay paddling downwind toward Bilinga for 3.5km before turning to paddle into it to Snapper Rocks, before heading to Currumbin RSL for the last 10km of downwind. It was a good race for me Tituoan and I got out in front early and it was basically a match race from the word go. We pulled away upwind from Ty Judson and James Casey before Tituoan got away from me in the downwind stretch to Currumbin. It was a weird race in a way that I was technically only racing the Australians but it was good to have Tituoan to chase. I’m very stoked to take my third Aussie title which makes it 3 from 3 starts!
Now I refocus my attention to the 18km distance race in China in two weeks time”
