Ex-Starboard shaper and total wave frother, Pete Cox, surfed the Spice for the first time in Indo at a secret destination filled with dreamy setups & no crowds. Again and again, Pete got blown away by the Spice’s performance. From having fun shredding small breakers to pulling into absolute bombs and everything in between, Pete had a blast on the snappy 8’8 model. Here’s his recount of what went down last week in Indo.
“Jumping on the Spice for the first time, running it as a quad set up it was super fast & the response as you drive through the top turn is exciting.
That feeling of fin release as the board delivers through its line & finds the lip with speed still accelerating allowing you to catch yourself with the arc of the turn bringing the board back beneath you .
The down the line response was something that reassured me in bigger surf but equally meant on the smaller days you could push for a section & make it comfortably & at no point was the boards width a negative to the surfing performance, if anything it enhanced the value of the board, ensuring on the spot turns to take off on a last minute peak or paddle in across a little side wash chop didn’t mean you clipping a rail & missing that wave.
The times when I found my foot on the red target zone of the rear foot pad during a turn meant that the board lit up & you could totally feel the pinched or stepped in rail outline snap in to action & make the turn tighter & super quick .
An amazing SUP design that gives you load of options & even more again when you switch it out to a thruster.
This one is a true 5-in-1 board quiver, solid sized surf tick, small quick sections tick, top turn speed tick, stability underfoot tick, one board too much fun tick.
Look out for it, the SPICE is coming in hot.”
